Evaluation of peak skeletal muscle perfusion in the lower extremities of athletes using arterial spin labeling
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background Arterial spin labeling (ASL) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows for evaluation of skeletal muscle perfusion and provides a non-invasive index of vascular function. Previous studies have investigated ASL responses during reactive hyperemia in healthy subjects and patients with peripheral vascular disease; however, ASL has not been applied for assessment of tissue perfusion in athletes. This study evaluated regional differences in peak tissue perfusion among calf muscle groups during reactive hyperemia in college football athletes and compared ASL responses to lower body strength and functional test results.

Evaluation of skeletal muscle microvascular perfusion of lower extremities by cardiovascular magnetic resonance arterial spin labeling, blood oxygenation level-dependent, and intravoxel incoherent motion techniques
BACKGROUND Noninvasive cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) techniques including arterial spin labeling (ASL), blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD), and intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM), are capable of measuring tissue perfusion-related parameters. We sought to evaluate and compare these three CMR techniques in characterizing skeletal muscle perfusion in lower extremities and to inves...
متن کاملASL demonstrates higher and more homogenous calf muscle perfusion with post-occlusion hyperemia than with exercise
Background Pulsed arterial spin labeling (PASL) is a non-contrast MRI technique capable of quantifying calf muscle perfusion with comparable accuracy to contrast enhancedMRI perfusion in normal subjects and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) patients. Peak perfusion can be achieved with exercise or during post-occlusion hyperemia. However, exercise stress may underestimate peak perfusion because...
متن کاملTime resolved observation of BOLD effect in muscle during isometric exercise
Introduction The BOLD-contrast mechanism arises from the change of blood oxygenation during cortical activation as a consequence of the increased arterial blood supply, which is most likely due to the increased oxygen demand. It has been originally suggested for the observation of neuronal activation (1). Recently it could be demonstrated, that changes in blood oxygen level can also be used for...
متن کاملAbnormal post-ischemic reperfusion patterns in the skeletal muscle of serotonin deficient mice identified by arterial spin labeling coupled to SSFSE imaging
Introduction Perfusion provides nutriments for cellular metabolism and drains catabolites. It is therefore a variable of paramount importance and is finely regulated. This is the case during an exercise when perfusion is drastically increased to match tissue metabolic demand. Also, many factors including nitric oxide, catecholamine, adenosine, prostaglandins, kinins, EDRF and stretch are known ...
متن کاملDeterminants of exercise calf muscle perfusion in Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)
Background In patients with PAD, ankle-brachial index (ABI) does not correlate well with time to claudication and lacks the ability to quantify tissue perfusion, therefore limiting the development of new therapies. Arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI is a novel non-contrast technique that measures peak calf muscle perfusion noninvasively at a microvascular level. We sought to analyze the relations...
